Upper St. Clair Location Norman Centre
Pittsburgh revision rhinoplasty specialist and plastic surgeon Dr. Chiu is uniquely qualified and recognized as a rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty specialist, and is highly sought after by patients, surgeons and other Pittsburgh plastic surgeons to help correct some of the most complicated and challenging problems, including patients who have already had rhinoplasty surgery elsewhere and are seeking improvement to their results. Dr. Chiu uses his skill as an artist and a surgeon to shape the nose to fit the face, rather than make it appear artificial. Patients marvel at how Dr. Chiu is able to create a nose that is both functionally and aesthetically pleasing.
Revision Rhinoplasty (revision nose reshaping surgery, revision nose job) involves repositioning and reconstructing the cartilage, bone, and soft tissue of the nose to achieve greater facial symmetry and aesthetic harmony, after rhinoplasty has been performed previously. Surgery of the nose to improve the function of the nose and to improve breathing can be performed in conjunction with a cosmetic rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is among the most common surgeries performed by facial plastic surgeons and plastic surgeons. As a result, many of you may be led to the belief that every plastic surgeon can consistently produce excellent nose surgery results every time. Unfortunately, this is far from reality. In fact, many nose surgery patients come to our Pittsburgh practice with aesthetic or functional problems resulting from a previous rhinoplasty that was poorly executed.
Pittsburgh revision rhinoplasty (Pittsburgh revision nose job) expert Dr. Chiu understands that revision rhinoplasty is the most complex and challenging procedure in the the field of plastic surgery. Rhinoplasty, more than any other procedure, requires the superior knowledge, experience, and judgment that Dr Chiu brings to you when he performs your nose surgery. Dr. Chiu is dual board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology, and he has published scientific papers on rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, and nasal obstruction as it relates to rhinoplasty. His extensive experience in cosmetic rhinoplasty and his in-depth knowledge of the function of the nose differentiates Dr. Chiu from other plastic surgeons and enables him to deliver the results and quality that you are looking for.
At our cosmetic nose surgery (rhinoplasty) practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, we realize the effect a small change in the nose can have on an individual's appearance, and on their self perception and personality. The perception of beauty in the face depends on underlying principles of symmetry and proportions. The nose, as the most protruding feature of the face, can undermine an otherwise symmetrical face if the nose is too large, crooked or disproportionate. The goal of nose surgery in our Pittsburgh practice is to change the shape or size of the nose so as to create a more harmonious symmetry between the nose and face, and to give the nose an unoperated and natural appearance.
In order to ensure the quality of your rhinoplasty surgery and results at our Pittsburgh office, careful and extensive preoperative discussions and planning will take place prior to your operation. Dr. Chiu will advise you extensively on how to achieve both your desires and overall harmony of your facial features. As an experienced Pittsburgh revision rhinoplasty surgeon, Dr. Chiu is not only skilled in making cosmetic changes, but also an expert at enhancing the function of your nose so that you can breathe more freely and comfortably. Many people suffer from blockage of one or both nostrils, which can be caused by previous operations, injury, or genetics. If your breathing is a problem, special tests to measure your degree of obstruction or to evaluate your sinuses may be required--these problems can be improved at the same time as your cosmetic nose surgery at our Pittsburgh practice.
Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) Surgery: Computer Imaging
Dr. Chiu uses computer imaging to show you your proposed rhinoplasty result for a chosen procedure. This allows you to communicate your goals and expectations, helps you to achieve the result you are looking for, and ensures that you and Dr. Chiu will share a common goal.
Rhinoplasty Surgery: Anesthesia
Typically, cosmetic or functional nose surgery will be performed as you sleep, under general anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain or discomfort. Occasionally, IV sedation and local anesthesia can be utilized.
Rhinoplasty Surgery: Incision placement
Dr. Chiu is extremely meticulous when it comes to planning and executing incision placement, and he takes extra care to ensure that your incisions heal quickly and without visible scars. During your consultation with Dr. Chiu at our Pittsburgh practice, he will fully evaluate your nose, history, and goals, and discuss with you in detail the plan for incision placement. Incisions can be placed inside the nostrils, or they can be made in the natural creases along the sides or near the base of the nose. Many plastic surgeons leave rhinoplasty incisions that are visible and/or incorrectly placed. But Dr. Chiu is a superspecialist when it comes to rhinoplasty/nose surgery. As a result of Dr. Chiu's extensive experience performing nose surgeries, both for cosmetic and functional reasons, his incisions leave unnoticeable, if not invisible, scars.
Rhinoplasty Surgery: Recovery from Nose Surgery
Before our patients have an in-depth rhinoplasty consultation at our Pittsburgh office, many are concerned about the downtime and recovery from rhinoplasty surgery, often due to the experiences of their family members or friends, or by what they see on television shows. However, Dr. Chiu's patients are consistently amazed by how quickly they recover from their nose surgeries. Typically, after Dr. Chiu's rhinoplasty, his patients experience very little or no pain, and there is minimal or no bruising. In some cases, Dr. Chiu will leave drip pads to absorb nasal drainage the night of the surgery, and this temporary inability to breathe is quickly resolved the next day when the drip pads are removed and breathing returns to normal almost immediately. Swelling is mild, and subsides in the first few days. If any sutures were placed in a natural crease, they are removed in several days. The external nasal splint/cast is usually removed in about 5 days.
Rhinoplasty Surgery: Activity Precautions
A few special precautions are required during your recovery. Bending over, straining, and/or lifting can prolong swelling, and these activities are not recommended for three weeks after nose surgery. Excercises like running should also be avoided for three weeks. Contact sports should be avoided for six weeks. You may drive when the swelling subsides enough to not interfere with vision, and you may fly two to three weeks after nose surgery.
