Kybella is an injectable composed of deoxycholic acid, a substance that the body produces naturally to break up fat cells in the gut after eating a meal. It is used to eliminate the excess fat cells under the chin/neck (submental) area by destroying the existing fat cells and eliminating their ability to store excess fat. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Chiu, recommends Kybella to his Pittsburgh, PA patients who are seeking a nonsurgical treatment alternative to neck liposuction. Kybella is noninvasive and offers long-lasting results. These injections can be a successful way to present a slimmer neck and more contoured chin area. Dr. Chiu invites anyone who might be interested in learning more about this treatment to schedule a consultation at Today's Cosmetic Surgery.
The best candidates for Kybella:
- Have moderate to severe fat beneath the chin, which gives the appearance of a double chin
- Desire a nonsurgical approach for fat reduction
- Desire long-term results
- Desire natural-looking results
"I’ve had nothing but great experiences at Today’s Cosmetic Surgey. Dr. Chiu and Sara are professional, compassionate, and experts at what they do. I have been getting Juvederm injections in my lips there for almost 2 years. My lips ALWAYS look amazing, natural, and just the right amount of full. I was very nervous when I went in for my first time because there are so many horror stories of lip injections. However, my lips have exceeded my expectations every time and Dr. Chiu is truly an artist. I would recommend him to anyone!"- C.P. / Google / Nov 19, 2017
"Love the Results! - Had a great experience with Dr. Chiu - he is an extremely talented surgeon and I'm really happy with the results of my surgery. Additionally, the process was a lot easier than I anticipated and I had very little pain."- C.D. / RealSelf / May 01, 2019
"I Had an Amazing Experience - Dr. Chiu is the most gifted plastic surgeon. I chose Dr. Chiu for his excellent reputation, kindness, and calm demeanor. He is one of only two facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons here in Pittsburgh, and he is the single one to whom other doctors refer their most difficult cases. I was a revision case and my face had been full of filler. Dr. Chiu took his time with me. He was able to..."- H. / RealSelf / Mar 04, 2019

"Thumbs-up Lip Filler - I had lip augmentation with Juvederm and the results are fantastic. I'm going to do this for as long as I have lips! Plus, the pain level was so low it was practically non-existent. Before this I had lip augmentation with another doctor and it was very painful, so I was nervous about doing it again. I'm glad I took a chance with Dr. Chiu and highly recommend him to others considering..."- L. / RealSelf / Jan 10, 2019
What to Expect
A number of small injections will be made in the fat under the chin during this outpatient procedure. A local numbing agent is typically administered prior to a Kybella treatment. The treatment typically takes around 15 – 20 minutes. Since 2 – 6 treatments are usually needed, they will usually be spaced out about 4-6 weeks apart.
After Kybella, there is minimal downtime, but patients might experience mild pain, swelling, bruising, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the injection site. These side effects could last 2 – 3 days. Some patients may notice a reduction of fat after just a single treatment, but most patients will notice improvements after 2 or 3 treatments.
