About Chin Augmentation
A chin augmentation procedure, also referred to as a mentoplasty, can greatly improve the structure and appearance of the chin and jawline in patients who are looking to achieve a stronger profile. Our double board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Chiu, offers chin augmentation surgery to his Pittsburgh, PA patients in order to enhance their cosmetic appearance and strengthen their jawline. Chin augmentation surgery can result in significant improvement to a face lift or rhinoplasty procedure result, depending on each individual presentation and expectations. Chin augmentation and shaping may also be achieved with temporary nonsurgical treatments such as dermal fillers. If patients are interested in this procedure, they should schedule a consult at Today's Cosmetic Surgery to discuss their options.

Ideal Candidates
Chin augmentation surgery can be an effective option for everyone, but it will produce the most optimal results for patients who are experiencing the following:
- A recessed chin
- A lack of definition in the jawline
- A weak profile due to poor chin structure
- Facial imbalance
- As a complementary procedure to face lift to accentuate the jawline
- In conjunction with rhinoplasty to create optimal balance and profile
What to Expect
A consultation will take place prior to the procedure where Dr. Chiu will discuss each patient's individual needs and goals. Chin implant surgery is performed through small incisions, either hidden inside the mouth below the lower lip, or in a concealed crease under the chin, to allow the scarring to be minimal. The implant will be strategically placed above the bone in a pocket that is created for the new prosthetic to sit. The length of the procedure can vary depending on the extent of the surgery and other procedures, but typically is about 90 minutes and is usually performed under local or general anesthetic.
Anticipated results
Depending on the extent of the procedure being performed, patients will have varying recovery times. During a standalone chin implant procedure, the recovery time will be less than those undergoing other procedures. Dr. Chiu will give specific aftercare instructions to guide patients in recovery. Dr. Chiu's is well known for delivering the most natural appearing surgical results with minimal recovery. He is able to minimize any pain and discomfort for his patients, although every patient should expect some swelling and possible bruising after surgery. Patients typically are able to resume work after dressing and any stitches are removed a week out from surgery.
